Hospital bed availability in Nigeria
OpenBed helps referring clinicians, ambulance crews and families find participating hospitals' own reports of hospital bed availability. Whether you are looking for vacant beds, hospital bed space or admission space, the live list shows the ward type, location, update time and a contact to call. Available space does not mean treatment is free of charge.
Check hospital availability on OpenBed. The service starts in Lagos. The live list, rather than a claim of nationwide coverage, shows which hospitals currently take part. A report helps you choose whom to call; it does not reserve a bed or guarantee admission.
How to find an available hospital bed
- Open the public bed list; there is no account to create and nothing to install.
- Choose the ward category you are looking for. Follow the referring clinician's description of the required care; OpenBed does not decide which ward is appropriate.
- Choose an area or tap Near me to compare straight-line distances. Your device location stays in your browser.
- Read the hospital's report and its update time. Old information, no recent report and a hospital not admitting are different from a confirmed available bed.
- Call the hospital before travelling or arranging a transfer. The hospital confirms current capacity and whether it can receive the patient.
Search by ward or type of bed
OpenBed's filters describe what participating hospitals report. A category in the tool does not mean a hospital currently has space in that category.
| Search term or care area | OpenBed category | Check reports |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency beds, accident and emergency, A&E, emergency department | Emergency (A&E) | Emergency reports |
| ICU beds, adult intensive care, critical care beds | Adult ICU | Adult ICU reports |
| PICU beds, paediatric or pediatric intensive care, children's ICU | Children's ICU (PICU) | PICU reports |
| Medical admission beds, adult inpatient beds, medical ward | Adult medical ward | Medical ward reports |
| Children's beds, paediatric or pediatric ward beds | Children's ward | Children's ward reports |
| Operating theatre availability, theatre capacity | Operating theatre | Theatre reports |
| Surgical beds, surgery ward, surgical admission | Surgical ward | Surgical ward reports |
| Maternity beds, obstetric admission, maternity ward space | Maternity | Maternity reports |
| NICU beds, neonatal intensive care, newborn ICU | Newborn ICU (NICU) | NICU reports |
| SCBU space, special care baby unit | Special care baby unit (SCBU) | SCBU reports |
Terms such as HDU, high dependency unit, ventilator, oxygen, incubator, dialysis, isolation, psychiatric, burns, trauma or specialist beds may describe additional needs. OpenBed does not currently offer separate filters or verified resource inventories for these. Ask the hospital directly; an ICU or ward count does not establish equipment, staffing or specialist availability.
Hospital beds near me, by state or city
Use the area selector or Near me on the live list. Distances are straight-line distances, not driving times. The Lagos guide explains the local government area search.
If you are searching for hospital beds in Abuja or the FCT, Port Harcourt or Rivers, Ibadan or Oyo, Kano, Enugu, Benin City or another Nigerian location, check whether participating facilities appear on the live list. OpenBed does not claim those locations have joined. A missing listing means OpenBed has no listing to show, not that the city's hospitals have no beds.
Referrals, hospital transfers and admission
For an interhospital referral or transfer, use the report to identify a hospital to contact. The referring and receiving clinical teams must confirm admission and any transfer arrangements directly. OpenBed does not triage patients, recommend clinical suitability, arrange ambulances or allocate beds.
For emergency admission, confirm directly that the receiving hospital is accepting patients. If a hospital says no bed is available, you can check reports from other participating facilities to contact. OpenBed does not decide where a patient should go. Do not delay emergency care while searching or comparing reports.
How current is the bed availability?
Each count is a hospital's statement at a stated time. OpenBed displays its age, marks older information and shows when there is no recent report. Data refreshes on the public page, but a fresh report still needs a call: capacity can change between reporting and arrival. Read how updates work.
Is OpenBed free? Can I book a bed?
The public tool is free, with no account and no app download. You cannot book, reserve or pay for a hospital bed through OpenBed. Admission, charges, deposits, insurance or HMO acceptance, and public or private hospital arrangements must be confirmed with the facility.
Does OpenBed show every hospital in Nigeria?
No. It shows participating hospitals' published reports. It is not a complete national hospital directory, a hospital quality ranking or a guarantee of available care. Read about OpenBed, which is run by Paddie Health Ltd in Nigeria.
ICU, newborn and children's care
Read the ICU, PICU, NICU and SCBU guide for the reporting categories and the limits of a capacity report. Let the clinical teams decide the right type of care.
For hospitals and ward teams
Learn about joining and bed reporting. Hospital staff publish their own counts; OpenBed does not estimate or alter them.
In an emergency, do not wait for a bed search. Call 112; in Lagos, the site also displays 767 for LASAMBUS. OpenBed is indicative only: call the facility before you travel.
